From One to Another

The exhibition From One to Another features works by seven West Australian artists connected through the

School of Visual Art at North Metropolitan TAFE. The relationships between them have evolved over time to

oscillate between lecturer to student, student to lecturer, lecturer to lecturer, artist to artist, and informal critics

of each other's practices.

The group navigates disparate ideas through an open-ended approach to materials and processes that

investigates multiple ways of being in the world. Beyond aesthetic concerns and commercial art-making

objectives, where a polished end-product determines modes of thinking and production, ideas responding to

psychological, sensory/phenomenological, ecological and cultural senses of place and relationship are tested.

In the vernacular of much women's art practice, work is often spawned in informal places from overlooked

subjects, domestic and otherwise. The artists explore traditional and unexpected materials such as eggshells,

cast metal, ceramic, paper, wax, feathers, dust, photographic archives, print and textiles.

Picking up on the theme of this year’s NM TAFE 125 Years of Creativity in the City, the exhibition From One to

Another continues to explore the legacy of a vibrant hub with a rich history of mentorship, learning, and

collaboration.
